​​​ABOUT CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Career Pathway courses offer opportunities for students to explore various fields of interest and prepare for college and employment. Things to consider:

  • Application courses - Students engage in authentic work experiences with business partners, such as, job-shadowing, mentoring, entrepreneurship, and short-term internships.
  • CAPS college credit options - Visit the CAPS website to learn more.
  • JCCC articulated credit - Credit can be redeemed after paying tuition for 6 additional credits at Johnson County Community College, see your counselor to apply for free Advanced Standing college credit. More information is available on the JCCC website.
  • Concurrent enrollment - Credit will be rewarded when you enroll and pay tuition at the university for college credit during the semester when the course is taken in a Blue Valley high school. See your counselor or instructor for more information.

ARCHITECTURE

Students use hand and CAD drafting to design solutions to authentic construction challenges.

CONSUMER SERVICES

Work directly with people in caring and service-oriented careers. Students in these pathway courses and FCCLA investigate relevant current issues and have the opportunity to participate in service learning projects. Related careers include child-care provider, community or recreational service director, personal trainer, employment counselor, individual or family counselor, financial advisor, and social worker.

ENGINEERING & APPLIED MATH

Students in this pathway apply technology and advanced math and science in the real-life engineering projects. Students work with local mentors in areas of civil and architectural engineering, robotics and electronics, computer integrated manufacturing, and aeronautical engineering.

HOSPITALITY & CULINARY

Students in this pathway learn the art and science of preparing and serving nutritious and appetizing foods. Students will research and prepare a variety of cuisines, cater an event, and intern in a food service establishment. Related careers include executive chef, food and beverage manager, restaurant owner, nutrition specialist, catering and banquet manager,event planner, and marketing specialist.

PROGRAMMING & SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

Individuals with expertise in programming are in high demand and make a significant contribution to our economy and society. Examples of careers in this field include game programmers, software designers, and operating systems engineers.

WEB & DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS

Students learn to create, design, and produce interactive multimedia products similar to that used in business communications, marketing, training, and entertainment. Examples of specific careers in this area include Web Designer, 3D Animator, Virtual Reality Specialist, Graphic Artist, and Multimedia Producer.

MARKETING

Students in this pathway apply principles of marketing and finance in real-life situations including marketing campaigns and the operation of a student-run enterprise. The employment outlook is strong and individuals with a college degree or computer skills will be sought for managerial positions.

This pathway includes journalism, broadcasting and film. The creative aspects of this cluster are rapidly merging with new technologies to open exciting possibilities.

GRAPHIC,​ INTERIOR & TEXTILE DESIGN

Visual Arts includes careers in graphic design, illustration, animation, computer artistry, interior & fashion design, marketing, and merchandising. Students design and create apparel; research and develop plans for residential markets; and explore business options.​​​​​​
