BVN Counseling Center Information          Updated August 2020

BVN Students and Parents,

Due to the changes involved in class scheduling with the addition of virtual classes for the 2020-21 school year, we will be reconfiguring schedules, and would like to give you the opportunity to request changes to your in-person classes now, in order to have the most accurate information possible. This is a separate process from the virtual add/drop process. If you are dropping an in-person class for a virtual class, you will accomplish that through the process outlined here - Back to School. Please call the hotline with any virtual registration questions – 913-239-4045.

To request a change to an in-person class, please do the following:

1)Check your courses under the Course Request tab on ParentVue or StudentVue. Even if you think you have the courses you want, please check again to see if you have 14 semesters of classes (not including Advisory) that you want.

2)If you want or need to make a change, please complete this google form requesting that change: Course Request Change for In Person Learning

  • This includes the following scenarios:
    • You have “See Counselor” in your course requests. This is entered when not everything you asked for worked, and you have openings in your schedule. Please suggest classes to fill these openings.
    • You’ve had a change of heart and want something different, including core classes, electives and level changes such as Honors ELA to ELA.

3)Provide as many alternates as you can, in order of preference. If the class you are asking to remove can be used as an alternate, please move it to the alternate list.

 Please Note:

  • The list of classes offered to each grade level is attached for your reference.
  • Be sure that if you are dropping a semester class, you replace it with a semester class, and replace full year classes with full year classes. Each course listed under your course requests is a semester. The full year courses are listed twice.
  • If your course list indicates you have a class that is missing a pre-requisite, please disregard. In most cases, this is not an issue.
  • If you have more than 14 semester classes listed (not including Advisory) please indicate on the form which classes to remove and add them to the alternate list if applicable.
  • As always, we will do our best to accommodate your requests, however you will not know your final courses until schedules are posted closer to the start of school.
  • The following classes are currently FULL and should be avoided when making requests:
    • Culinary Arts I
    • Culinary Arts 2
    • Baking and Pastry
    • Ceramics 1
    • Ceramics 2
    • Child Development
    • Relationships and Personal Development
    • CAPS CNA
    • CAPS Sports Medicine
    • CAPS Sports Medicine Capstone
  • The following classes are NOT offered this year:
    • Media and Pop Culture (this is being offered virtually)
    • Interior Design
    • Fashion and Apparel
    • Culinary Essentials
    • Ideate to Innovate
    • Sculpture I
    • Sculpture II
    • Philosophy
    • Counselor Aide
    • Office Aide
    • Peer Tutoring
    • Study Hall (Only seniors can request a study hall at this point. All others can request one when school starts).

The request form will close on August 7th at 5:00PM. Any requests after this time will be addressed through a separate schedule change process once school starts. Counselors return to work on approximately August 12th and will be available to answer questions regarding this process at that time, and make any necessary adjustments prior to the start of school.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this unusual start to the school year.

Enjoy the remaining weeks of summer,

College Admissions Tests
Students planning to attend a four year college must take either the ACT or SAT beginning second semester of junior year. Many students repeat testing into their senior year. Colleges will accept either ACT or SAT for admission. Some students take both tests to compare scores in the event they perform better on one. ACT and SAT tests are not required for those attending community colleges. Please visit college websites for more information about required admissions exams.

PSAT

The PSAT/NMSQT is a standardized test providing firsthand practice for the SAT. It also gives students an opportunity to enter the National Merit scholarship program and gain access to college and career planning tools. The test measures: critical reading, math problem-solving and writing skills. The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT are to:

  • Receive feedback on strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college. Students can then focus their preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
  • See how your performance on an admissions test might compare with others applying to college.
  • Enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (11th grade).
  • Help prepare for the SAT and become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions on the SAT.
  • Receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service.

ACT/PSAT/SAT Workshops
Blue Valley Schools partners with Princeton Review to offer workshop opportunities for standardized tests such as the PSAT, SAT and ACT. Find out more.
